Carjacking scenario - What do you think?

Tossing the fake key sounds like the best solution IF you can get into a safe place while he is picking up the key. It may give you time to get into a better self defense posture. I'm going to get some keys for this purpose.

Again, I know this is an old thread, but I think it might be a bad idea to get a fake set of keys just for the purpose of tricking someone into a better position to shoot at. The courts in some places it see this as premeditation; or at least fuel to put you in jail rather than (or in addition to) the carjacker.

Some states permit the use of deadly force to protect property, others only permit protecting your life or safety. If your (or a loved one's) life is in danger, do anything you can to protect it. Otherwise, it might be better to let the bad guy go. Sheet metal can be replaced easier than skin and bone.

I think you missed my point. The idea is to get into a better DEFENSIVE POSTURE, not offensive. I wouldn't be trying to put the thief in my sights.
Our goal here is to get as far away from the physical threat as possible. Self defense is just protecting you and yours (flesh and blood, that is!).
