2 Years Of Free College For All?

Postby getvicious » Fri Jan 09, 2015 9:47 am

Today, President Obama is supposed to announce his plan to give all students free community college attendance for 2 years.

Apparently, each student must perform "work" to keep this federal subsidy. Work, like commit to 2 years of military service, 2 years of civil service, 2 years as a volunteer in community service or something else to help the community and society? Unfortunately no. The "work" that's called for is "enroll at least half-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and make steady progress toward completing a degree in three years."

According to the Time article this is $3800.00 a year for up to 9 million students ($34200000000.00 annually - $34.2 Billion).

No word on how the Federal Government (we taxpayers) pay for this. I'm interested to hear his plan since, on the surface, it sounds like an unfunded program that will only increase the deficit.

Here's 2 articles about this plan from Forbes and Time:

Obama is a moron, and this is just another example to prove it.His "concern" should be on all the high school drop-outs in this country, get them to graduate. All I see coming from this is more of our tax dollars being spent by that moron. If a student wants to go to community college there are free grants and scholarships to help him. morayman.......

parkerd, I tend to agree with you. But - those things are not the point and have nothing to do with the 2 year free college plan.

IMHO, this is about what many liberals and progressives believe - that everyone deserves to go to college. Everyone deserves free health care. Everyone deserves a high pay job. Everyone deserves a driver's license. Everyone deserves a single family house to own. Everyone deserves the benefits of citizenship. Everyone deserves to stay in this country even if they entered it illegally. Everyone is entitled to what many people work all their lives to achieve.

It's just another thing everyone is entitled to.

Equality in these areas is a right and entitlement. Not equality of opportunity or personal responsibility to work to achieve.

The progression from 'unfair' to 'deserves', to 'entitlement', to 'right' illustrates the way liberals use words to distort their message. If they started with college is a right, everyone could see that's not practical or possible. Liberals have also distorted the 'immigration' situation. 'Illegal aliens' were promoted to 'illegal immigrants', then progressed to 'undocumented immigrants'. They are not immigrants at all. They're just illegal. Calling things by their ordinary name, not some PC code word, is a step toward honesty.

Like most social problems, the government does more to cause them than to cure them. As the government raised student loan limits, tuition increased to meet the new limits. Expensive educations are a direct result of government funding.
... your mileage may vary.

Yeah. Just like the "stimulus" was going to fund all those "shovel ready" jobs, most of it never made it that far. It was squandered away by all the leaches attached along the money trail. Or, when during the Bush administration, they just had to bail out all the banks to, what was it they said, avert a financial "disaster"? Yeeeaaahhh, right.

I am afraid that most of the money collected, through more stupid taxation, will just get squandered away before it ever gets to the actual destination it was intended for. Sigh.

Why not just go ahead and give them credit for taking the classes most of them will fail because they aren't willing to put in the effort?here you are "fill in the blank" you deserve everything for free because of something that happened 200years ago and never actually affected you.

Good conversation Folks,

IMHO, there are only two things in this life that are truely free.....
The integrity we are born with and the air that we breathe.
Most people don't take care of either of those, so how can anyone expect more "false freebees" to do any good?
Staying focused.....Always diligently vigilant
