The most common accepted definition is that an Assault rifle is a rifle that can be set to Fully automatic.
This is NOT the Media's definition BTW..
A defense gun is a weapon used for defense, so really, almost any gun.. depending on the situation.. If you are carrying a Desert Eagle it may be considered MORE than a defense gun, but if you live on a patch of land along the southern boarder, it may be perfectly reasonable (notice I did not say reliable!)
Hope it helps.

And require an even more extensive background check..

Can you use rubber bands, belt loops and pieces of string to turn a rifle into a nearly full automatic rifle?

The anti-gun left thinks AR stands for automatic rifle... These morons couldn't find their butts with both hands and a flashlight.

The term "Assault Weapon" as used by the media and (as a result) most people, is essentially a marketing term like SUV. There is no real definition except what you want it to be.

Except in the case of the StG 44, where the name Sturmgewehr directly means Assault Rifle.
