Interesting 911 Call Experience Yesterday

Postby getvicious » Wed Dec 10, 2014 12:55 pm

I had a very interesting 911 call experience yesterday.

We were on the way to do some Christmas shopping at a mall about 45 miles from home. We were going thru Durham NC at 615PM. We saw an accident between two cars had taken place at an intersection. Apparently it had just happened as the people in the cars were walking around looking at their cars and each other (as we do after we've hit something) and traffic had not started backing up yet. There were no indications anyone was injured.

I called 911 to be sure they knew about the wreck and were dispatching at least the police to investigate, and got this message: "You have reached the Durham 911 center. We're experiencing high call volume. Do not hang up. Your call will continue to ring in the 911 center until it is answered."

I was a little surprised.

This repeated in Spanish and again in English before a 911 operator picked up my call. Probably a delay of 2 - 3 minutes - long enough to get about a mile away (thru a couple stop signs and wait for a traffic light).

I've never gotten the "All representatives are busy helping other callers, please remain on the line and the next available representative will be with you shortly" recording with 911 before.

Good thing my call wasn't for a real life and death emergency. Sort of proves the "When seconds count the cops are just minutes away" saying.
