Is anyone aware of a firearm that initially flopped due to quality/design issues that later went on to be successful?

Particular gun? Not really. Calibers and companies, I can think of a few. Taurus, and the 300 BO. One got a bad rap from 6th hand accounts even after they turned their shit around. The other should have failed, not necessarily because it's a bad design, more because it's used outside it's designed purpose, but stays bolstered by fanboys.

I'm sure that there are lots of first designs that were bad when they were initially released. It's really hard to anticipate all of the things that can go wrong. If you have ever bought a new car, when it was released as a new model, there are lots of problems that arise. That is one of the reasons for a warranty. I spent 30 years at Boeing, most of it in design and 11 years as a manufacturing engineer.

It's not the blast that kills you - It's the tumble to the bottom of the 800 foot crater.....

That's very true. I remember reading about the crappy plastic guns that shoot tiny .22 rounds and jam all the time back in the late 1960's. I also remember being told the AK-47 was a piece of Russian junk. I think both those rifles have shown otherwise.
