S&W 439 range report

Postby bikerlbf406 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 12:40 am

Well this past weekend I took my conceal carry class for IL. The range qualifications consisted of 30 rounds total, 10 rounds each at 5, 7 & 10 yards. The target is one of a human torso with circles of center mass of 7 (outer ring) to 10 (inner ring) and then x in the center. To qualify you must get 21 out of 30 shots in the 7 ring on inward.........anything outside of the 7 ring does not count. The weapon I chose to qualify with was my Smith & Wesson Model 439 9mm. Prior to this I never shot this weapon as I got it around the beginning of the year from my Uncle and haven't had the opportunity to shoot it. My shoots were off to the left of center mass, however I did manage to get 27 out of 30 shots to count. The other 3 hit the target but hit outside of 7 ring. I only manage to shoot the 30 rounds with it but it shot quite well and was pleased with it's performance.

bikerlbf406 - Good to hear you passed your qualification. Congrats.
It's not the blast that kills you - It's the tumble to the bottom of the 800 foot crater.....

Your 439 has an interesting history. Do you know what year it was made? Congrats for the qual.

No I I don't know much about it at all. All I know is I bought it maybe 6 months ago from my Uncle, and he bought it used at a gun show around 15+ years ago.

Here's a bit of discussion about discovering the age of your S&W 439 ...

Actually, I just remember that after getting it I asked help to date it on the S&W Forum and I just looked up my post on it, and it was dated as 1987 but that's all I know.

Cool gun.
I had an alloy frame from the same era, but it was larger & double-stack, Ruger P91 .40S&W.
Cheers.

Just looked it up in my paperwork, and the original post I made on S&W Forum to determine when I bought, and for how much, and how long my Uncle had it. He held the gun for me several months while I came up with the funds for it, however I took possession of the firearm at the beginning of January. I paid $300 for the gun. Like I thought he said, he had it for around 15 years himself, and he believes he paid $350 for it at that time. It was by pure accident I ended up with the 439. He was trying to sell it to several gun stores but they all declined to purchase it stating that everybody wants polymer framed guns instead of aluminum like this. He just happened to mention it to my father (his brother) about trying to sell it with no luck. My dad mentioned it to me during a conversation, and so I decided to call my Uncle up the next day after I found out, found more about the gun out through him, and after looking up the value online, asked him if he would hold it for me until I could raise the funds over a couple of a months and he agreed. I believe it was in October of 2015 when I found out about it myself and asked him to hold it for me.

I see its picture on your collections page. Looks like it's still in decent shape.
I like exposed hammer pistols. Won't find wooden grips on too many polymer guns.
My understanding is that the 439 is the second generation of the 39 series, which was S&W's first semi-auto, originally submitted in 1954 to replace the military 1911.

curious ... Is your thumb safety also a decocker?

Yes the safety is also a decocker. It is in great shape for it's age, and really, pictures just don't do it justice.

Sweet, sweet gun.
I'm sure your uncle is glad to see it kept in the family.
Stay safe.

Notice that the 439 extractors vary ... some are short & fat, some are long & thin.
Perhaps they were redesigned, from a plunger to a pivot.
For general reliability sake, the hook should extend below the horizontal centerline of the cartridge.
