After market magazines

Postby GoesBang » Mon Jun 02, 2014 7:12 pm

This morning I contacted a major US manufacturer of rifle/handgun magazines about this. The guy I spoke with happened to be the CEO of the company (which I was not aware of when I talked with him). He/they are very interested in my ideas and are already moving forward after my initial contact. Needless to say, I was very impressed.

We will be looking at 3 mags of 10, 15, and 20 round capacity. All components will be Made in the USA, or I will refuse to sell them.

No availability date.
No prices set.
No other details.

Please be patient while I work out more details.

Wish me luck in this endeavor as well.

Hope all works out for you. If I can get my CPX up and running, more rounds in an extended mag (with some kind of adapter to match the grip) would be excellent. Good Luck.

another source of magazines would be really nice for the CPX line. I was going to say that a 12-round magazine option would be nice but I just recently bought a Taurus PT111 G2 with 12+1 capacity (2 mags, also) so even affordable 10-round mags would interest me once I get my carry permit.

Please keep us posted...I am sure lots of us are interested in seeing this come about.

Thanks for the input, both of you.

The mags won't be just for CPX handguns. It will be a line of mags to suit the needs of various models with "similar" design and capacities. This is why I chose to go with 10, 15, & 20 round mags. To widen those option would be cumbersome and too expensive to say the least.

I assure you that a grip extension for the 15 round SCCY mag will exist. Maybe one for the 20, but I'm not even thinking that far ahead. There are many other design factors that I am dealing with first and foremost.

I'm so glad that I live and think outside the box!

I would go for a 12 round flush fit magazine like the other brand has as an option.

UPDATE:

My initial contact is going to cost me too much money to work with that company. However I have contacted another manufacturer who is willing and able to make this work.

Wish me luck.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is he going to fit more rounds in a mag with a flat baseplate if it isn't going to extend below the grip, and if it IS going to extend, why a flat baseplate?

I guess I don't understand! If you want 15, 20 rounds buy a larger gun. The SCCY was designed for concealment and carry it is not a range gun not intended to have thousands of rounds fried from it. If you want a range gun buy a range gun there are many on the market that cost a little more than the SCCY. The new Diamond Back FN (I think that is the designator) is selling at $369 around here full size and 15 round mag. Given the purpose of the SCCY are you going to carry it with a 15 or 20 round magazine. Just my .02 cents have a great day.

The 12-round magazine is a tad longer than the OEM magazine. The OEM baseplates do not fit because the little tangs that hold the baseplate point outward, unlike the OEM which points inward. Therefore they are not interchangeable.

Additionally, the SCCY magwell has a tab that extends downward about 1/8" in the front. The 12-round magazine will clear that tab, yet still fit "nearly" flush.

A completely new baseplate would need to be made to fit the new magazine bodies if I have them made in 10-round sub-compact versions. The mold for that is very expensive. I am talking to a different company about possibly making a pinky extension baseplate for these magazines.

In the words of someone else I know, "It's your gun. Do what you want with it."

Keep in mind that these are hybrid magazines. They will function in the Ruger P-Series handguns as well as the SCCY CPX.

No one has ever suggested that you should conceal carry a 15 or 20-round magazine. If you don't need or want that additional capacity, don't buy them. If you do, then by all means buy them.

Keep the change.
